So Lond Steve, and Thanks For All The Fiche…

I still remember holding my first IPod in my hand. I was one of the first people in school to have one, I’m not bragging (any more), but it was still a pretty rare thing and no one really got excited about it. It was bulky, white, the earphones were massive and it was 5 gig. I loved it. I could listen to nearly all of my music collection on it and I didn’t need anything else to keep me entertained. I could sit on the back of the bus and immerse myself in O.K. Computer, Nevermind, Paul Simon and The Eels. No one else understands you when you’re 15.
I can’t imagine many other inventions that have had such a big impact on musicians since the gramophone. Nothing else will, in my limited imagination, allow a people such access to such a range of musicians. I know for a fact that my band considered it a bench mark when we finally appeared on ITunes. And so it should be, the excitement in feeling like you’re ‘in’. It made us all the more accessible, and as an artist struggling to be heard, accessibility is everything.
It was the first, it was the best, and like any good entertainer it keeps re-inventing itself, staying relevant to the next people in line. I look forward to it’s next evolution and wonder where it will take me both as a musician and a music lover, somewhere exciting and cool I think. I suppose the point I’m trying to make is…thanks. Thanks for the opportunities I’ve had, for the fun I’ve had and for the sheer excitement at looking at a shiny new toy.
